BURGLARY METHODS AND SAFETY SOLUTIONS FOR DOORS

Just as you should secure your windows, your exterior doors are just as important. In fact, proper door security is crucial since most break-ins occur through the back door. Again, choose the right products that have the SKG seal of approval and Politiekeurmerk Veilig Wonen. It only takes the burglar about 30 seconds to enter your home, with non-approved locks or improper installation!

In the door drawing below, we show which parts of your door could use extra security. We also explain all the tricks that burglars use and we show several videos showing how easily they can enter a house that is not properly secured. Of course we also show you the appropriate solutions!

For example: security fittings with cylinder protection, a security door lock, security cylinders and hinges.

Also useful to check:

Conman at your door

Someone rings your doorbell, tells a sad story or pretends to be an employee of a company and tries to gain access to the home that way.

1. Keep uninvited visitors out

By using the AXA security restrictor (SKG-1 star with check mark additional), you can open the front door about 10 cm and you can safely see who is at the door.

The security restrictor is available for both front and back doors!

2. Digital door spy

AXA’s digital door spy is a great additional protection against intruders. The large display clearly shows who is at the door. This way you decide whether to open or not!

Note: Do you have glass in your front door in the place where the door spy should be? Then the product is unfortunately not suitable due to the drilling of a hole (Ø 14 mm) in the door for proper mounting.

Break-ins with hard plastic, flat object (card)

A popular burglary method in which the burglar uses a hard piece of plastic to push back the latch bolt of the lock, thus gaining easy access to the home.

3. Door security strips

With an AXA door security strip (SKG-1 star and with tick additional) you prevent the burglar from reaching the latch bolt. Furthermore, the strip also has the advantage that burglars have difficulty getting between your door frame with a crowbar or screwdriver.

Hinge pin tapping

For outward opening windows and doors fitted with non SKG-approved hinges, burglars can easily tap out the hinge pins to open the window or door.

4. Security Hinges

Security hinges (SKG-2 or 3 stars) from AXA have a built-in thief’s claw that, even after removing the hinge pins, makes it impossible to open the door from that side.

Core pulling or cylinder pulling

In the most popular burglary method of core pulling (or cylinder pulling), the burglar turns a screw in the cylinder, then uses a special tool to pull this cylinder out of the lock. With no approved locks, the action can be done in as little as 30 seconds!

5. Security hardware with core-pull protection

The AXA security fitting with cylinder pull-out protection is equipped with a steel protector that makes it impossible to pull out a cylinder and open the door. This product has the highest security class, namely SKG-3 stars and thus works as a burglar retardant up to 5 minutes.

This form of security is absolutely crucial for any exterior door and ensures that the most vulnerable component (the cylinder) in your door remains protected. In addition, this product is one of the few locks that contributes to visible security: that is, the burglar already recognizes this type of hardware from a distance, making him/her more inclined to skip your home!

TIP: also think about securing your storage room or shed!

6. Security door locks

Security hardware alone won’t get you there. In addition, make sure you have a solid security door lock (SKG-1 or 2 stars) from AXA!

Thanks to the reinforced stainless steel front plate, combined with the hardened steel security pins in the deadbolt, it offers increased resistance to the door being broken open. The locks are available in various PC sizes, with a round or straight faceplate.

7. Safety door cylinder

Finally, to complete your door security, you need a security cylinder (SKG-2 or 3 stars). AXA cylinders protect your standard (Security, Comfort and Ultimate series) against various burglary methods, such as knocking and drilling

If you choose an SKG-3 star AXA cylinder (Xtreme Security series), it will also protect you against core pulling. This makes it impossible to pull the cylinder out of the lock!

TIP: through our cylinder and key service you can order customized (and keyed) cylinders or reorder additional keys and cylinders!
